Hey there, here's your monthly roundup of tech reads,
job offers, and community threads.

There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation and naming things.

Deno Is Joining Cloudflare — deno.com
The whole Deno team is moving to Cloudflare. The Deno runtime gets monthly fixes for one more year and then development stops, Deno Deploy shuts down in six months with a migration path to Workers, and JSR lives on under Cloudflare. The runtime that was born from “10 things I regret about Node” is being folded into someone else's platform, and the Hacker News thread, with Ryan Dahl himself questioning the point of reimplementing Node, has turned into a referendum on whether the JavaScript runtime wars were ever winnable.
Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026: Only 22% Are Happy at Work — stackoverflow.co
This year's headline isn't a language ranking. Only 22% of developers say they're happy at work and 33% call themselves unhappy. Self-employment almost tripled, from 3.9% to 10.5%, and 64% now visit Stack Overflow less for simple questions. JavaScript is still the most-used language for the twelfth year running. Is it a burnout alarm, or developers quietly going independent? Worth reading before your next one-to-one.
The Reverts Will Continue Until Morale Improves — Peter Eisentraut
Around ten significant features were pulled from PostgreSQL 19 during its beta. A long-time committer explains why: ambitious scope, uneven code quality, a security crisis that pulled senior reviewers away for months, and much stricter reviews that surfaced edge cases late. His proposal is an official “experimental” status for new features. Is shipping less the price of a database you can trust, or a process that needs fixing?
Racket's Build Server Was Compromised, Exposing Its Signing Keys — racket-lang.org
A crypto miner landed on a university-hosted macOS build machine on or before August 10. The attackers apparently didn't know it belonged to Racket, and no installers were altered, but the machine held the project's Apple and Windows code-signing keys. Both certificates are now revoked, and macOS users on 8.12–9.3 need to reinstall. Few open-source projects like to think about this kind of supply-chain story: a small team, a shared build box and keys stored somewhere they shouldn't be.
Fingerprints Are the New Cookies — royfish.dev
Third-party cookies are on their way out, but tracking didn't go away. It moved. This piece shows how GPU quirks, fonts, timezone, CPU and dozens of other signals add up to an identifier that survives incognito mode and VPNs, explains the entropy math behind it, and argues that browser vendors have offered more promises than protection. Extensions can't fix it at the engine level. Uncomfortable reading for anyone who has ever added an analytics script.
How Savepoints Quietly Throttled Our Postgres Queue — incident.io
Adding workers to a Postgres-backed queue stopped adding throughput. The culprit: each job ran inside a SAVEPOINT, which together with SKIP LOCKED created MultiXact entries and heavy LWLock:MultiXact contention. Separating job acquisition from processing and using a single dispatcher per pod made it 3.5x faster. Both sides of the “just use Postgres as a queue” debate will find ammunition here.

The Story of C++ — CultRepo Documentary

The Last Software Engineer — Kent C. Dodds (Nerdearla)
Kent C. Dodds runs a thought experiment: if coding tools keep getting better, what would the last software engineer still do? His answer is judgment: knowing what's worth building, weighing trade-offs and owning the outcome. Thirty minutes on the skill that survives when the tooling changes.

bilawalsidhu/gods-eye-view
“A spy satellite simulator in your browser, except the data is real.” It puts live flights, ships, satellites, earthquakes, wildfires and public cameras on a photorealistic CesiumJS globe, all from open data sources. A viral YouTube series took it past 50k stars, and it's an eye-opening demo of how much public data is out there.

nasomers/flycast-wasm
Sega Dreamcast games running at a locked 60 fps in a browser tab. The trick is a from-scratch SH4-to-WebAssembly JIT that compiles the console's machine code into WASM at runtime. Bring your own legally dumped BIOS and games. The write-up on how the recompiler works is worth the click on its own.
